Why we celebrate Daga 2018
Harvest rituals all over the world symbolise the end of a cycle and a time when our ancestors created ceremonies to give thanks for the gifts of nature. It is also the time of abundance, the time of harvesting the fruit of a year’s work and dedication that will enable us to move forward. The end of a cycle always contains the seeds of a new beginning.
At the beginning of this year, KRIKRAGAA accepted a new challenge and moved all the studios and belongings to develop a new space in Dreverna, LOFTAS Kūrėjai. A lot of work has been done here, in silence, during all these months of preparation. We started from a deactivated school in winter and, little by little, saw the seeds of a creative community growing around us.
To celebrate our year of work and the fruit that we have been maturing in Loftas, we want to give thanks to our community by preparing together this year’s Autumn Equinox Festival, inspired by our traditional ceremony DAGA.
In the past, at this time of the year, the community came together in every village in Lithuania to celebrate the end of the harvest period and to share the yields of the season. It was also the moment in which our ancestors worshipped their gods and goddesses to ensure a good harvest in the following year. For LOFTAS/KRIKRAGAA, this year’s celebration symbolises the personal harvest of each of us here and is also a way to express our gratitude to all the people who supported us. In this way, we hope to continue developing our work here and strengthen the ties of our community.
Reclaim your food – support local harvest!
The idea of the eco market is to bring together farmers/producers who are engaged in helping to build an alternative food system in our region. We want to support their local initiatives and open up a space where the community can get to know its farmers and reconnect with the origins of food and its traditions.
@Producers: If you identify with the call, you are welcome to join the market and bring your products to be sold during the festival without any fees. We would appreciate it, if you could contribute to our celebration by bringing a sample of your products or other donation for the DAGA table.
@Consumers: Get to know your farmers – buy local food! By buying the products of local farmers you support the development of small-scale initiatives based on solidarity economy. It means not only better food and respect for nature but also local jobs and respect for the people who are keeping our traditions alive.
Sharing is caring: For this year celebration we want to revive the spirit of community that our ancestors kept for years as a base of their existence. Food is more than nourishment, it embodies and reflects a complex web of social relationships. Share the food you grow or make with your community. Enlarge your circles, cultivate your circles and encourage others in their food production activities. We will prepare a table for collective food and invite people to collaborate with our celebration by bringing dishes.
